Frida Kahlo
Her Photos

01.02.2015 –
10.05.2015

For the first time in Germany, Marta Herford will be presenting 200 photographs from this collection which served Kahlo as a recollection, a source of inspiration and as working material.

The Mexican artist Frida Kahlo became world-famous with her unique painting style in which she processed her turbulent life – her illness, her pain, her marriage to Diego Rivera. It was only after Kahlo’s death, however, that a huge, private photo archive was discovered that gives us completely new insights: pictures of the family, her political struggle, her damaged body. Photos by world-famous photographers such as Man Ray, Martin Munkácsi, Edward Weston, Brassaï and Tina Modotti are accompanied by pictures taken by Frida Kahlo, anonymous private photographs, and portraits produced by her father, himself a professional photographer. The result is a haunting document of her era and an intimate glimpse into the life of one of the twentieth century’s outstanding artists. The selection was compiled by the acclaimed photographic historian Pablo Ortiz Monasterio for the Museo Frida Kahlo in Mexico City.
