More on the blog (German)

Benjamin Katz (*1939) achieved world fame with haunting artist portraits of Georg Baselitz, Sigmar Polke or Gerhard Richter. But his private archive of more than half a million negatives reveals a lot more other moments.

With around 200 black-and-white photographs, the overview exhibition in the Marta Herford opens up a new cosmos of this extraordinary photographer whose unerring view skilfully looks past the obvious in order to find the little sensations in the apparently incidental. Katz often revisits such places, observing street scenes with their protagonists, and opening up powerful pictorial moments full of poetry, humour and lightness.
